Yes. A foreign national can apply for a KRA Personal Identification Number (PIN) in Kenya. The application starts through KRA iTax, but the supporting documents and verification route depend on why the PIN is required and the applicant's status in Kenya. Employees, investors, dependants, students, property buyers and other non-citizen categories should not be filed under one generic checklist.
Can a foreigner apply for a KRA PIN in Kenya
KRA publishes separate registration requirements for several categories of non-citizens. These include foreign employees and professionals residing in Kenya, foreign investors, non-citizen spouses of Kenyan citizens, students or interns, diplomats and certain persons connected with organisations covered by privileges and immunities rules.
The first step is therefore to identify why you need the PIN and your current immigration or residence status. Using the wrong applicant category can result in an incomplete file or a request for additional documents.
Foreigner ONLINE KRA PIN application?
Yes. KRA's current guidance says PIN registration starts online through iTax . The applicant selects the appropriate taxpayer type and completes the online registration details before receiving an acknowledgement receipt.
However, online application does not mean every foreign or non-resident case is automatically completed remotely . KRA's resident/foreign registration guidance states that non-residents should present the acknowledgement receipt together with the relevant supporting documents to iTax at Railways Club to complete registration. The correct completion route therefore depends on the applicant category and the instructions generated for the application.
What is a KRA PIN used for in Kenya?
A KRA PIN is a tax identifier used when dealing with KRA and in a range of government, business and regulated transactions. Depending on the transaction, it may be required for:
- tax registration, filing and payment;
- company and business registration processes;
- property registration and stamp-duty related transactions;
- motor vehicle registration;
- licensing and certain government transactions;
- banking or commercial onboarding where the institution requires a PIN.
If your objective is to establish a foreign business presence rather than obtain an individual PIN only, compare Kenyan company registration with foreign company registration in Kenya .
Common application problems to avoid
- Using the wrong applicant category: the evidence required for an employee differs from an investor, dependant or student.
- Mismatched names or employer details: passport, permit/pass and employer or investment documents should describe the same applicant and relevant Kenyan entity consistently.
- Missing immigration endorsement or status document: where KRA requires a permit, Special Pass, dependant pass or student/research pass, the relevant endorsement may also be required.
- Incomplete investor evidence: investor files may require company records, proof of investment and agent/KenInvest documentation depending on the category.
- Ignoring post-registration tax obligations: obtaining a PIN can create or accompany tax filing obligations. The correct tax obligations should be confirmed for the applicant's actual Kenyan activity.

Foreign investor PIN application in Kenya
Investor applications deserve separate attention because KRA asks for evidence connecting the applicant to the Kenyan investment. Depending on the case, this may include company records, proof of investment, an appointment/introduction by a Kenyan tax agent or other recognised representative, and KenInvest-related documentation where applicable.
If the PIN is needed as part of a Kenyan company setup, also see our company registration in Kenya guidance. If the applicant will work or carry on an approved activity in Kenya, the immigration position should also be checked; see immigration permit services .
Individual KRA PIN vs company KRA PIN
This page is primarily about individual KRA PIN registration for foreign nationals . A Kenyan company or a registered foreign-company branch is a non-individual taxpayer and follows a separate company PIN process. If your objective is to form a Kenyan company, use our company registration page. If an existing overseas company will register a Kenyan branch, use our foreign company registration page.
KRA PIN cost for foreigners
Government fee: the KRA PIN registration pages reviewed for this update do not state a government application fee for the PIN registration itself. Any professional, tax-agent, legal, certification, notarisation or other third-party costs are separate.
Professional fee: our fee should be quoted after confirming the applicant category and document position, because a straightforward resident application and a non-resident investor file do not involve the same work.
How to apply for a KRA PIN as a foreigner
- Identify the correct applicant category. Employee, investor, non-resident investor, dependant, student/intern and other categories have different supporting documents.
- Start the PIN registration through KRA iTax . The registration information must match the applicant's passport and supporting immigration or investment documents.
- Complete the relevant registration details. This includes the applicant's identity details and the tax or activity information required for the selected category.
- Generate and keep the acknowledgement receipt. KRA lists the acknowledgement receipt as a supporting item for multiple foreign-applicant categories.
- Complete the category-specific verification. KRA states that non-residents receive an acknowledgement receipt and should present it with the relevant supporting documents to iTax at Railways Club to complete registration. Foreign applicants should still follow the instructions issued for their specific category because administrative arrangements can change.
- Receive the PIN certificate after approval. Keep the certificate and iTax access details securely because the PIN may be required for later tax, business, property or regulatory transactions.
How Biz Brokers Kenya assists with foreign KRA PIN registration
Our role is to identify the correct foreign-applicant category first, review the supporting evidence against the applicable KRA requirements, and then coordinate the agreed application and verification steps. The exact scope depends on whether the applicant is an employee, investor, non-resident investor, dependant, student, property buyer or another category.
| Stage | What we handle |
|---|---|
| Applicant classification | Confirm why the PIN is required and identify the relevant KRA foreign-applicant category. |
| Document review | Check the passport, immigration, employer, investment, company, dependant, property or institutional documents relevant to that category. |
| Application coordination | Prepare or coordinate the iTax registration and the acknowledgement or verification requirements within the agreed scope. |
| Completion and next steps | Coordinate completion of the agreed process and flag the immediate tax-obligation or compliance steps that should be checked after the PIN is issued. |
For an initial review, send the applicant's nationality, current country/location, reason the PIN is required, Kenyan immigration status (if any), and the supporting documents already available.
KRA PIN processing time for foreigners
Processing time: KRA states that residents completing the normal online registration with the required resident identification can receive the PIN certificate immediately after registration. Foreign and non-resident categories that require supporting-document verification do not have one universal approval period stated in the KRA guidance reviewed on 30 September 2026.
What happens after a foreigner receives a KRA PIN?
Check the tax obligations attached to the PIN and make sure they match the applicant's actual Kenyan activity. A PIN can carry filing obligations, while a PIN Without Obligation (PWO) is intended for an individual who is not currently engaged in taxable activity. If taxable activity begins later, KRA says the relevant obligations should be added on iTax.
A foreign national who later exits Kenya and wants to de-register the PIN should follow KRA's foreigner PIN de-registration procedure . KRA requires pending returns and taxes to be addressed first and may require evidence of exit and supporting documents.
KRA PIN for foreigners: FAQs
Can a foreigner get a KRA PIN in Kenya?
Yes. KRA publishes registration routes for several non-citizen categories, including foreign employees, investors, spouses, students/interns and certain non-residents.
Is KRA PIN registration free for a foreigner?
The KRA PIN registration guidance reviewed for this page does not state a government application fee for the PIN itself. Professional fees, tax-agent or legal fees, certification, notarisation and other third-party costs are separate where applicable.
Does every foreigner need an Alien ID before applying?
No. An Alien ID is one resident route, but KRA also publishes separate requirements for foreign employees with valid work authorisation, investors, non-citizen spouses, students/interns and non-resident investors. The correct route depends on the applicant's status and purpose.
Can a non-resident foreign investor apply for a KRA PIN?
Yes. KRA has a specific category for a non-citizen investor residing outside Kenya, with supporting requirements including a certified passport copy, Kenyan agent details and documentary evidence of the investment.
Does a foreign investor always need a tax agent or lawyer?
KRA's investor guidance includes an introduction or appointment involving a Kenyan tax agent or lawyer/agent, depending on the investor category and the specific KRA checklist. This should be confirmed against the applicant's current category before filing.
Can I get a KRA PIN if I am not resident in Kenya?
Potentially, yes, depending on why the PIN is required. KRA publishes specific routes for some non-resident circumstances, including non-citizen investors and certain property transactions. This does not mean every foreign applicant can use the same route; the reason for the PIN must match an applicable KRA category and supporting evidence.
